That evening, amidst the flowers and fountains in the Garden of the Generals, the chancellor of Aragon sat with Mohammed bin Sa'ad al-Zagal, the emir of Granada. Beside the emir sat his vizier, sipping a fig liquor, eating crisp pastries stuffed with squab, cinnamon, and almonds, watching a young girl called Sariya perform a dance she had learned in the harem.
